{Looks} "Born This Way" Lady Gaga/Rick Genest-inspired Skull Makeup

Happy March 1st! ALSO! HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY TO MY BLOG! WOO! What better way to celebrate than by partying with the GAGA!

After waiting for what seems like forever, the video for Born This Way has finally been released! I told myself that I'd wait a few days before recreating this look, since I'd be pretty busy this week. But I gave in!
I was way too excited and I was itching to get down and diiirty. If you haven't seen Lady Gaga's video for "Born This Way", do it now! It's a trip! You have to hand it to the woman, I don't think anyone else could pull off anything as bizarre as that. She's definitely made a name for herself. Truthfully, I did enjoy the video. I probably have seen it about 6 times right after the first time. Now don't get me wrong, I love Mama Monster. I LOVE her. She's one of my biggest inspirations of all time, but the only thing that bothered me to no end was the really tacky eyeball glued to her chin. Haha. Seriously! The GOOP didn't bother me as much, but that eyeball stuck out like a sore thumb. It just seemed like it was a last-minute idea. It felt so out of place to me. :(
Amazing, amazing video and concept nonetheless. I thought it was really cool that Rick Genest made a cameo and that Mama Monster 'Zombified' herself alongside him. For those who don't know, Rick Genest is widely known as the fully tatted Zombie Boy. You heard right folks, that was not makeup! I find him so incredibly fascinating! The makeup artist did a hell of job on recreating Rick's look on Gaga. The attention to detail and everything, so consistent. I was just so stoked and I wanted to try out the look for myself. Not just that, but it was also a challenge since this was my first attempt. I did do a similar Sugar Skull look not too long ago, so I kind of had an advantage since I got pretty familiar with skull structure. A tube of black lipstick, gel liner and 2 hours later, I can say that I did a pretty damn good job! Haha. Nothing was really too difficult, there was just a lot of detailing, which took a lot of patience. Was worth it though!

For those curious about the products I used:
- NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk
- Palladio Rice Powder in Translucent
- Wet n' Wild Black lipstick (which I got back around Halloween)
- Maybelline Eye Studio gel liner in Blackest Black
- CG Black Eyeshadow

I want to point out that the other side of my face is supposed to be a look based on Gaga's new promotional Viva Glam look by MAC. I was originally planning on doing separate Gaga looks, but I thought it'd be fun and more creative if I just meshed the two.
So yes, hope you guys enjoyed this! It was really fun to do a really elaborate look for a change! Planning to do more, definitely!

  1. DC-- your skull makeup is amazing!! I'm going to the monster ball at the end of the month and this is my inspiration. I'm not sure how to start since I've never used makeup before but I have a month to learn, haha. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Nathan you are super sweet! Thank you!! I appreciate that so much! You are very welcome!
I searched a very clear photo of Rick instead of using the actual scenes from the video since I could barely see all the detailing.

For starters, use any white base (I used NYX's Jumbo pencil in Milk), draw a line down the middle of your face and thinly distribute that all over one side and apply a translucent face powder (facial rice powder is what I used since I have an oily complexion) to set it.

Next, I just used a black gel liner and I outlined all the details first using a fine-tipped eyeliner brush. I used black lipstick (or any black face paint
)to fill-in big areas first, and more gel liner to fill-in smaller areas and to draw out all the details. You may need to dab black eyeshadow over the areas where you used the lipstick because it can get pretty shiny overtime, and we want a matte look.

Hope that helps a wee bit! I'm sure you can do it! I'm rooting for you! Haha. And have a blast @ Monster Ball!

    xx
